FAQs

What happens, if I can't travel due to COVID-19?

If traveling is not possible due COVID-19 we will facilitate the workshops and events for the program remotely. Otherwise the Innovation Camp (21.- 23.09.2020), the Acceleration Kick-off Workshop (30.09.2020) and the Demo Day (26.11.2020) will take place in Vienna, Austria.

Are travel and accommodation expenses covered?

Yes, reasonable travel expenses (transportation to and from Vienna, accommodation for non-residents) will be reimbursed following VERBUND travel expenses rules (train, flight economy, taxi/rental car/own car if necessary). However, if the event won’t take place on site but remotely, no travel and accommodation expenses will be covered.

What is the working language?

Please hand in workshop input, documentation, and pitches in English. While you are working in your team the language of your choice can be spoken.

Is it necessary to travel to Vienna for this event?

If traveling is possible (depending on COVID-19 travel restrictions), it is mandatory to attend the Innovation Camp, the Kick-Off Workshop and the Demo Day at the end of the program (if you are among the selected startups). Events are taking place in Vienna. Depending on the team, there are also 2-3 on-site meetings during the Acceleration (Proof-of-Concept) phase. In case traveling won’t be possible we will facilitate the workshops and events remotely.

Are only startups from the energy and infrastructure sector included?

No. We are equally interested in startups and also SMEs working on technologies, solutions or services that could be used for the energy and infrastructure industry but have not yet provided an application in this field.

How can I apply for this program?

Apply HERE, fill out the application form and provide the core information about your company. It takes approximately 15 minutes to register and present your startup. If we require further information, we will contact you for a personal interview.
Application deadline is the 26th of July 2020, 23:59 CET.

What happens after my application?

The best startups will be invited to  a remote pitch in front of the top managers and domain experts from VERBUND and its partners to discuss their business model, technology, and potential use cases. Successful candidates will then be invited to the Innovation Camp.

The selected startups will enter the Acceleration (Proof-of-Concept) phase and will pitch at the final event in front of top management of VERBUND and its partners. Successful teams will then be given the chance to enter a cooperation with VERBUND or its use case partners Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft, OMV, Post and Austrian Power Grid.

How does the selection process work?

The call is open until the 26th of July, 2020, 23:59 CET and all applications will be reviewed during the following weeks. Admission is on a rolling basis.

After an objective rating of all applications, you will get the notification in case you are among the top selected startups, who are invited to present their ideas with a remote pitch.
For the use case Infrastructure of the Future, management from VERBUND, Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft, Post and Austrian Power Grid will decide about further participation.

For the use case Hydrogen Storage & H2 Security of Supply, management from VERBUND and OMV will decide.

For all other use cases, management from VERBUND will decide.

What is the Innovation Camp?

It’s a three-days workshop (21.-23.09 in Vienna), where startups, as well as domain experts and top management from VERBUND and its partners, will meet to identify open and critical questions and match between startup capabilities and requirements of VERBUND and its use case partners. Also there will be stated a clear common understanding of the next steps: field trials, PoC roadmap incl. budget, marketing scenarios, business case.

In case traveling won’t be possible (due to Covid 19 pandemic and travel restrictions) the Innovation Camp will be held remotely.

Is transportation and accommodation covered for the Innovation Camp?

Travel expenses are covered for up to 2 team members. Accommodation including breakfast is covered as well. Lunch and dinner will be provided at the event.

Who decides about the participation to the Acceleration Phase?

A jury consisting of the members of the top management of VERBUND and its use case partners Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft, OMV, Post and Austrian Power Grid.

What is the difference between an Ecosystem Partner and a Use Case Partner?

Ecosystem partners are members of the overall VERBUND X Accelerator network. They will be involved in key events of the Program as guests and also can play an expert and mentoring role for startups and other partners. But they are not involved in decision making in the Selection and Acceleration Phases of the program.

Use case partners are also members of the overall VERBUND X Accelerator network. In addition, for Infrastructure of the Future (VERBUND, Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft, Post and Austrian Power Grid), for Hydrogen Storage & H2 Security of Supply (VERBUND and OMV) and for all other use cases (VERBUND) they will be involved in decision making in the Selection and Acceleration Phases as well as partners with selected startups when participating in a Proof of Concept in the Acceleration Phase.

What does the budget during the Acceleration Phase include and how big is it?

Budget for testing, field trials and prototyping foreseen (amount depending on project scope, subject to negotiations), travel costs subsidized.
